The 'Complete' History of the Internet

The Complete History of the Internet

Okay not the complete Internet history but just the cool stuff. This is the history of the Net from the perspective of a computer geek who likes knowing more than what the instructions simply tell us.

Altoids wireless Card

Altoids wireless card
I've seen many different altoids "hacks" i decided i needed one under my belt; I took an old 802.11b card and broke it open spliced the usb cord to make it shorter (no soldering involved) . To make things even more worth while removing the antenna improved signal strength by about 30%! Gotta love the curiously strong wireless freshness.

XBOX 2; the nexgen Xbox

The Guts of the Next Box
# CPU - Xenon's CPU has three 3.0 GHz PowerPC cores. Each core is capable of two instructions per cycle and has an L1 cache with 32 KB for data and 32 KB for instructions. The three cores share 1 MB of L2 cache. Alpha 2 developer kits currently have two cores instead of three.
# GPU - Xenon's GPU is a generation beyond the ATI X800. Its clock speed is 500 MHz and it supports Shader 3.0. Developers are currently working with an alpha 2 GPU. Beta GPU units are expected by May and the final GPU is slated for a summer release. The final GPU will be more powerful than anything on the market today; in game terms, it would handle a game like Half-Life 2 with ease.
# System Memory - Xenon will have 256 MB of system RAM. Keep in mind that this number should not be equated to typical PC RAM. The Xbox has 64 MB of system RAM and is a very capable machine.
# Optical Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The drive is slated to run at 12X.
# Memory Units - Xenon will use 64 MB to 1,024 MB memory cards. 8 MB is reserved for system use, leaving a 56 MB to 1,016 MB for user data.
# Hard Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon's hard drive is optional. 2 GB of the drive will be used as game cache. The final drive size is still being determined.
# Camera - Xenon will have a USB 2.0 camera. It's capable of 1.2 megapixel still shots and VGA video. Photos can be used in-game and for gamer profiles. The camera can also be used for video chat. It's unknown if the Xenon camera will allow for EyeToy-like gameplay. Developers are currently using a simulated camera driver.
# Sound Chip - Xenon does not have an audio chip in the traditional sense. Decompression is handled by hardware, while the rest of the chores are handled by software. DirectSound3D has been dropped in favor of X3DAudio. The former was deemed too inflexible.

Microsoft Sues KSU Student

Microscrewed!
Microsoft has sued a Kent State University student over his eBay resale of software purchased for $50 at a discounted student rate. David Zamos, 21, purchased the software while attending the University of Akron last September. The chemistry major has countersued and plans to defend himself in court against Microsoft's four-member legal team. Microsoft has indicated it might drop its lawsuit. However, the software giant says it won't halt its case unless the countersuit is dropped by Zamos who says he won't drop the countersuit without an apology from Microsoft.

World Record for Smoking

World Record for Smoking[link]
Did Stefan Sigmond of Transylvania gain the world record for smoking by smoking 800 cigarettes in less than six minutes? If I hadn't seen the picture I wouldn't have believed it was possible, but apparently it is true, although I'm a bit wary about whether using this 'special wheel-like device' should really count. It doesn't seem like you would be fully smoking all the cigarettes. Anyway, I hate smoking, but I'd love to see someone whip out a device like this at a bar and start puffing away.

animation and paint brushes

Let Flash clean up the mess! [link]
Today's post is about a nifty little flash site called 'artpad'. It's a great little page that lets you paint on a canvas with paint brushes and has a surprising number of controls. You can choose from 44 colours, 6 brush sizes and varying opacity levels and then create your own mini masterpiece. You can then email them to people. When the person opens them they can watch the picture being drawn, and the brushes moving around the canvas which is really cool.

Senator Introduces Anti-Phishing Bill

Putting an end to phishing season[link]
Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy has introduced a bill to the U.S. Senate that would criminalize phishing. Should it be signed into law, Leahy's draft bill, the Anti-phishing Act of 2005, will impose a maximum of five years of prison time and fines of up to $250,000 on fraudsters who are successfully prosecuted. Invented before spamming, phishing now joins the list of internet no no's!
